Chairs

CHAIRS is a bi-annual digital magazine that tells the peculiar story of how fashion is reflected in the arts, specifically in contemporary art, as a mirror to our reality. This magazine is first and foremost about fashion, its place in the modern world, its reaction to it and vice versa. What is the role of fashion in these turbulent times and what does it say about the relationships we maintain - to the society and its institutions, as well as in our personal lives.

CHAIRS is based on the assumption that fashion and art have, since the beginning of time and still are, constantly changing seats – these two disciplines, wielding great power and leverage over key economic and social matters, maintain a fascinating dialogue with one another. A dialogue that is worth observing, documenting and analyzing.

In times of ‘liquid modernity’, a term coined by the Polish sociologist Zygmunt Bauman, representing the ever-changing instability, uncertainty and unpredictability as a quasi-permanent state - CHAIRS aims to take in the moment and acknowledge the different aspects and manifestations of contemporary fashion in today’s world.  CHAIRS dives in, revealing surprising connections between fashion and THE OTHER, creating small islands of stable land in this unstable ocean of ‘liquid modernity’. Each issue of CHAIRS will focus on a specific aspect of this overarching theme, allowing us to gradually amass a unique body of knowledge.

CHAIRS seeks to provide a seat and give voice to artists, designers, theorists and thinkers alike to present their works and offer their unique perspectives in articles that will drive a paradigm shift in the interface between fashion, art and us.
